A chance to find out about plans to prevent flooding in Pocklington town centre

A public consultation session is to be held on the council’s plans for a new flood alleviation scheme to protect the town centre in Pocklington.

The event will be an opportunity to see drawings and plans for a new scheme, which would involve a sensitively designed earth structure located in rural farmland to the north east of the town, in a river valley.

The proposed new structures would effectively store potential flood water from Pocklington Beck upstream of the town, well before it reaches the town centre.

The free public consultation will be held at Burnby Hall on Wednesday 14 September, between 2.30pm and 7pm, and will be attended by council staff, who will be on hand to answer questions. No appointments are necessary – people can just come along to find out more.

The proposed flood alleviation scheme, which would itself require planning permission, would be mainly funded by a Section 106 Agreement as part of a proposed residential development in the vicinity of the new flood protection measures.

Subject to planning permission, the council hopes to begin work on the scheme either in spring 2017 or spring 2018 (work can only be carried out at certain times of the year), and it is hoped that completion would be within approximately ten months of work getting under way.

Councillor Symon Fraser, portfolio holder for asset management, housing and the environment, said: “I hope that as many people as possible will come along to Burnby Hall to see these proposals, which, if implemented, will greatly reduce the risk of flooding to the businesses in the town centre.

“The concept of the housing development in this location, which would largely fund the flood alleviation scheme, has been agreed in the council’s new Local Plan, and I would anticipate there will be planning applications for both the housing and flood alleviation schemes in due course.

“This event will be a great opportunity to come and see the flood alleviation proposals, and to discuss them with key council officers.”
